Trashy Bags Africa
Trashy Bags Africa is a pioneering social enterprise based in Ghana, dedicated to environmental sustainability and community empowerment. Since 2007, we have been at the forefront of the fight against plastic waste, turning discarded water sachets and other non-biodegradable materials into high-quality, durable, and functional products such as bags, backpacks, and accessories.
Our mission is to inspire environmental consciousness while creating sustainable livelihoods. By addressing Ghana’s growing plastic waste crisis, we provide innovative solutions that merge environmental impact with social development.
At the heart of our operations is a commitment to sustainability. Each month, we collect and recycle over 250,000 plastic sachets, preventing them from polluting streets, waterways, and landfills. This process supports local waste collectors while creating employment opportunities, with most of our artisans and team members being women from the local community. By equipping them with sustainable jobs, we help empower families and build resilience in underserved populations.
Beyond recycling, we prioritise education and advocacy. Our Sustainable Education for a Greener Future initiative engages schools and communities, fostering awareness of environmental issues and promoting the value of waste as a resource. To enhance our impact, we continuously invest in climate-friendly production techniques to ensure our operations align with global sustainability standards.
Trashy Bags Africa exemplifies how innovative thinking can tackle environmental challenges while empowering communities. Together, we’re transforming waste into a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Africa.
